Troop 1 was founded in 1917, seven years after Boy Scouts was first established in the United States. It is one of the oldest continually active troops in the country. An article from the Huntington Beach News dated April 27, 1917, announced the Troop’s founding by Rev. Coates and referred to us as the Kit Carson Troop. After several years it was clear the troop needed a place to call home. A volunteer effort led by Mr. C.E. “Ed” Morris convinced the City of Huntington Beach to grant permission for the Troop to build a cabin at the present site in Lake Park.
The Cabin was formally named the Russ Paxson Scout Cabin to honor Russ’ accomplishments and dedication to scouting. Russ Paxson earned his Eagle Rank from Troop 1 in 1939 was active with the troop for over 70 years. He served 2 terms as scoutmaster and worked tirelessly in support of the cabin and scouts.
When your son joins Troop 1, he will be one of the fortunate scouts to experience the traditional values of our great troop and the Paxson cabin. There will be adventures and experiences that will never be forgotten. Troop 1 and its cabin have served Huntington Beach for many generations and will continue to serve the boys in our community for generations to come.
First Christian Church of Huntington Beach has been Troop 1’s charter organization since 1921. This long and supportive partnership has allowed the troop to grow and thrive. Troop 1 is part of the Pacifica District, which is in turn organized under the Orange County Council which is part of Boy Scouts of America.
