How to become a Merit Badge Counselor
Step 1 - Prerequisites
- You must be a Registered Scouter with Troop 1
- You must have a Valid YPT certificate from Scouting.org
- You must have Valid 506AB registration including the associated fingerprint screening
- Please also prioritize the below MB Counselor Training
- SCO_471 - Advancement
- SCO_472 - Aims and Methods of Scout BSA
- SCO_474 - Intro to Merit Badges
- SCO_486 - What is a Merit Badge Counselor
Step 2 - Eligibility Verification with Orange County Council
- Follow link to “dual” register with the Pacifica District
- This is a paperless way for the OC Council to ensure all the Prerequisites are confirmed.
- This verification does not require any additional fees as long as applicant is a Troop 1 Scouter.
Step 3 - MBC Application for Specific Merit Badges
- Fill in the PDF MB Counselor application form. This form is fully enabled for typing into the form…except for the signature line.
- There are 8 rows which you can use to request MBC approval.
- We appreciate you signing up for as many as possible to increase our in-house MBC availability.
- Please sign up for at least 1 Eagle Required Merit Badge and at least 2 Non-Eagle Required Merit Badges. (Click here for a list of all Merit Badges)
- Please be as descriptive as possible on the qualifications you have in this field…even if your only qualification is a passion for the subject matter.
- You can print and sign this form with ink, or you can choose to fill it in and sign it electronically by inserting a new Text box on the signature line (blue arrows shown on image below).
- Provide the troop a PDF copy of your filled in and signed application, which will be taken to the Council for final approval.
